Skiing Accident — 29 December 2013

On 29 December 2013, Schumacher was on vacation with his family at the Méribel resort in the French Alps. While skiing off the designated trail, he hit his head on a rock, causing severe brain injury. He was immediately taken to the Grenoble University Hospital in critical condition, where he was put into a medically induced coma.

He underwent two surgical operations on his head to save his life. Schumacher remained in a coma for 4 months, amidst global attention and great concern for his life.

16 June 2014 — The Awakening of Hope

On this day, 16 June 2014, his manager Sabine Kehm announced that Schumacher woke up from the coma and was discharged from the intensive care unit. He was transferred from the Grenoble hospital to the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland to continue his long rehabilitation journey.

Sabine Kehm said in the official statement:

«Michael has left the intensive care unit and has left the Grenoble hospital to continue his long treatment in a location that will not be disclosed. He is no longer in a coma».

The announcement came after 4 months of medical secrecy and silence about his condition, as the family did not allow the release of any medical details about his health.

His Journey After the Coma

Since his awakening from the coma, Schumacher’s condition has remained away from the spotlight. His family has adhered to complete secrecy about his health out of respect for his privacy.
