Establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization (1964)
On May 28, 1964, the first Palestinian Conference convened in Jerusalem, announcing the establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) under the leadership of Ahmad Shukeiri. The organization served as the official umbrella for the Palestinian people and their sole legitimate representative in international forums. It united various Palestinian factions under one banner, aiming to liberate Palestine and establish an independent Palestinian state. The organization gained observer status at the United Nations in 1974 and became the voice of Palestine worldwide.
Declaration of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan (1918)
On May 28, 1918, the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was declared, becoming the first parliamentary secular republic in the Islamic world. This fledgling republic was a pioneer in granting women the right to vote before many Western countries and established a modern education system and a national army. Although its existence was short-lived (it fell in April 1920 to the Soviet Red Army), May 28 is celebrated in Azerbaijan today as Independence Day or Republic Day.
