On June 2, 1944, the first rocket projectile to reach outer space ascended, achieving a historic moment that the world had never seen before. On that day, the Nazi German forces launched the A4 rocket, known as the V-2 — the first human vehicle to cross the Karman line, the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.

The A4/V-2 project began during World War II under the leadership of German scientists Wernher von Braun and Walter Dornberger, who realized the potential of rockets as long-range weapons. The rocket was approximately 13.5 meters long and relied on a liquid-propellant rocket engine that worked with a mixture of ethyl alcohol and liquid oxygen, giving it the capabilities to successfully exceed the atmosphere.
Reaching Outer Space and the Moment of Penetration
When V-2 rocket MW 18014 was launched from the Peenemünde base in northern Germany, the rocket reached an altitude of approximately 182 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. This altitude was classified as the first documented access to outer space according to international standards such as the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). Although the rocket fell back to Earth afterwards, this mission proved to humanity that space travel had become possible.
The Impact of this Event on Humanity
Less than two years after this achievement, V-2 technology became a vital basis for rocket programs in the United States and Russia, ultimately leading to the space race and then to the launch of Sputnik in 1957, and eventually to the first astronaut. Since then, and thanks to the achievement of this rocket, the gate has been opened for humanity to say one day: “We are able to go beyond the planet.”
