We’ve all had days when we feel our energy has run out before we go to sleep, but sleep itself is difficult. The problem isn’t always stress or work pressure — sometimes the evening habits you do before bed are what sabotage you. In this article, I give you ٦ simple habits; if you apply them, you’ll notice a difference in your sleep and mood from the first week.

١. Dim the lights an hour before bedtime

The body needs a signal that it’s time to sleep, and bright lights — especially phone and TV light — disrupt that signal. An hour before bed, dim the lights at home, and put the phone on night mode or better yet keep it away from you. This helps melatonin (the sleep hormone) work properly.

٢. Don’t eat a heavy meal before bedtime

The stomach needs about ٣ hours to digest heavy food. If you go to sleep with a full stomach, the body works on digestion instead of resting, and you’ll find yourself tossing and turning in bed. Tip: Have a light dinner and give yourself enough time before sleeping.

٣. Drink something warm and soothing

A cup of herbal tea — such as chamomile, mint, or lavender — helps calm the nerves. Avoiding caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks) after midday makes a big difference in sleep quality. Caffeine stays in the body for ٦ hours or more.

٤. Write down your thoughts before bedtime

Many people can’t sleep because their minds are busy planning tomorrow and worries. Try writing for ٥ minutes before bed: what you want to do tomorrow, what’s on your mind. Just getting thoughts out of your head onto paper brings relief and helps you fall asleep faster.

٥. Keep the bed for sleep only

Don’t eat, work, or scroll on your phone while in bed. The psychological link between the bed and sleep is very important. Keep the bed a place dedicated solely to sleep, and you’ll notice you fall asleep faster as soon as you lie down.

٦. A short relaxation routine

  • Deep breathing exercises for two minutes (inhale ٤ seconds, exhale ٦ seconds)
  • Light stretching for neck and shoulders
  • Read a paper book (not phone) for ١٠ minutes
  • A warm shower helps lower body temperature afterwards

The most important of all these tips: consistency. The body gets used to the routine. The first two weeks may feel difficult, but after that sleep becomes easier and deeper. Because sleep is not a luxury — sleep is what determines how your whole day will be.
