Imagine a mountain millions of years old, in the middle of the largest palm oasis in the world, with natural caves inside it with a constant temperature throughout the year. This is Mount Qara in Al-Ahsa, one of the strangest natural landmarks in Saudi Arabia and registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In this quick guide, we give you everything you need to know about Mount Qara before your visit.
Who is it for: Everyone — families, youth, tourists
Where is it: Al-Ahsa — 15 km east of Al-Hofuf city
How much does it cost: Symbolic entrance fees (caves and museum)
When: All year round, but best from October to April
💡 Fact: The caves of Mount Qara are cool in the summer and warm in the winter — the temperature is constant throughout the year
Why is Mount Qara special?
Mount Qara, or Mount Shubayan, is not an ordinary mountain. It is a mesa — a flat-topped mountain with a height of 75 meters. But what makes it unique is the caves inside it, or what they call “Al-Maqarnat” or “Al-Magharat”.
These caves are 100% natural — they were not made by humans. They were formed by erosion factors over millions of years within the sandstone and limestone rocks. And the most beautiful thing about them is that their temperature is constant throughout the year (around 25 degrees Celsius), meaning they are cool in the hot summer and warm in the winter.
