The story of Al Musmak Fortress — from fort to museum
Al Musmak Fortress was built in 1895 by order of Prince Abdulrahman bin Daba’an, who was the Emir of Riyadh at that time. The castle was built from clay, mud, and tile, and has 4 large towers, each 18 meters high. The towers were used for surveillance and shooting through internal wooden stairs.
But the real fame of the castle came during the Battle of the Unification of Riyadh in 1902, when King Abdulaziz — who was 26 years old at the time — entered the castle with his men and opened Riyadh. The mark of the spear that broke on the castle door is still there.
In 1995, the High Commission for the Development of Riyadh transformed the castle into a museum that showcases the stages of the Kingdom’s establishment and the championships that shaped Saudi history.
