🗓️ 1703 — Founding of the City of Saint Petersburg
On May 27, 1703, Russian Tsar Peter the Great founded the city of Saint Petersburg (Saint Petersburg) on the banks of the Neva River, after winning the Great Northern War and securing access to the Baltic Sea.
The city became the capital of Russia for more than 200 years and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its European architecture and grand palaces. Today, Saint Petersburg is Russia’s second-largest city and one of the world’s most important cultural centers.
⚓ 1905 — Battle of Tsushima: Japan Crushes the Russian Fleet
On May 27, 1905, during the Russo-Japanese War, the Battle of Tsushima (Battle of Tsushima) took place off the coast of Korea. The Japanese fleet, led by Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō, attacked and nearly destroyed the Russian fleet.
The Russians lost 21 warships and more than 5,000 soldiers, while Japan lost only 3 torpedo boats. This battle made the world recognize Japan as a major military power. It remains one of the most famous naval battles in history.

On May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge (Golden Gate Bridge) in San Francisco opened to pedestrians for the first time. The next day, it opened to vehicles. At the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world — 2.7 kilometers long, painted in its signature orange color.

On May 27, 1941, during World War II, the British Royal Navy succeeded in sinking the German battleship Bismarck (Bismarck) in the Atlantic Ocean after a three-day chase.
The Bismarck was the most powerful battleship in the world at the time and had sunk the British battleship HMS Hood before its own destruction. The British deployed 42 warships to hunt it down, and it finally sank at a depth of 5 kilometers below sea level. Around 2,100 German sailors went down with the ship.
🌍 2006 — Devastating Yogyakarta Earthquake
On May 27, 2006, a Yogyakarta earthquake (Yogyakarta earthquake) struck the island of Java in Indonesia with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale. Despite its moderate strength, the quake was extremely destructive because it was very shallow (only 10 kilometers deep).
The earthquake resulted in more than 5,700 deaths and 37,000 injuries, and destroyed over 150,000 homes. It was one of the worst natural disasters in modern Indonesian history.
